Gedichte von H.N.C. Weidemann

Brothers Christian and Heinrich Weidemann shared a deep appreciation for beauty and an intrinsic need to create. Though they spent their lives practicing different trades, their work can be viewed as complementary. Christian created beautiful art with brushes and paints whereas Heinrich told stories with a pen and paper.

As a way of honoring Christian and Heinrich’s creativity, the Capitol’s Exhibit Team decided to pair examples of Heinrich’s poetry with art by Christian and his son, Oscar. The result is this simple but lovely digital flipbook.

Heinrich Weidemann wrote all the poems contained within. His brother Christian penned the biographical introduction for the original 1897 publication of the poetry book, Gedichte von H.N.C. Weidemann, following Heinrich’s death.

This project would not have been possible without generous family support from the heirs of Alma Weidemann Swanson. We would also like to thank Dr. Thomas Lovik and the Michigan State University Translation Center for their work translating many German poems and documents for Art Adorns the Paths of Life.
